Why depiction of the Muslim God and Prophet is frowned upon

Regarding the furoe over the Prophet's cartoons and the recent anti-Islam video, two offences are at play: the negative portrayal of the Prophet, as well as the depiction of the Prophet himself. Muslims regard any visual portrayals of the Prophet and their God as a mark of disrespect to their religion, and the same used to be true of Christianity. They regard their God to be too sacred and holy to be depicted properly by man, and more importantly, they are afraid that it will be portrayed inappropriately and even distastefully.
