Why depiction of the Muslim God and Prophet is frowned upon

Regarding the furoe over the Prophet's cartoons and the recent anti-Islam video, two offences are at play: the negative portrayal of the Prophet, as well as the depiction of the Prophet himself. Muslims regard any visual portrayals of the Prophet and their God as a mark of disrespect to their religion, and the same used to be true of Christianity.
